Today was a marathon journey of 15 hours, 5,000 miles, 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and a thousand degrees of cultural separation. My companion is the woman who made me, so yes, you could say it is a girls trip, as long as you mean the kind where you are buying a to-go drink at the convenience store at 10p.m. and longing for your bed. The cosmos doled out a few lessons today — such as that sleeping masks are good but red-eyes suck and so do airports that close their bars at 10 p.m. and don’t reopen them until 8 a.m. 😑 I learned it’s totally worth it to pay $35 for a carry-on that is only filled with pillows and blankets, that if you don’t pick your feet up, you WILL fall down – especially if you’ve been up all night, and that Colombian customs agents take themselves a little too seriously.

Today I found out that Colombian Spanish is kind of a lot different than Mexican Spanish, that I can’t say no to a panhandler if they are holding a baby, and that roaming street rappers are cool. Also, I think it must be really easy to get a babysitter in Cartagena because there were an impossible number of babies out there being lugged around by people asking for money. I discovered that Colombian people are so extremely nice and that I am so photogenic that I really could have made it big if I wasn’t so old (Thanks, Mom.) Today was a day for getting situated and getting our bearings. Tomorrow the real exploring begins. Stay tuned, I think this is going to be good…
